Child Services
At The Calm Center, we are focused on building upon the resilience you already possess to facilitate growth in our community. We offer individual and family therapy. We value cultural differences and seek to work with clients from diverse backgrounds.
Many children experience trauma or distressing events that affect their current thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Youth who have been exposed to abuse, neglect, or single-incident traumas (e.g. car accident, natural disaster, loss of a loved one) may begin to struggle academically, have increased anxiety, social isolation, tantrums, wet the bed, or nightmares.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for youth ages 6-18 aimed to decrease trauma-related symptoms.
In treatment we would assess for the impact of trauma through screeners for symptoms of trauma (e.g. PTSD). We integrate caregivers in helping the child address the underlying thoughts, behaviors or emotions that surface as a result of the trauma.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment for children 2-7 years old focused on decreasing negative behaviors.
We aim to enhance the parent-child relationship to decrease negative behaviors and teach more effective discipline strategies.
PCIT occurs in 2 phases: Child-Directed Intervention (CDI) and Parent-Directed Intervention (PDI). Each phase is about 6-8 weeks and includes observations, live coaching, and feedback to enhance your parenting skills in live time.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
For your child struggling with anxiety or depression, we utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help children who have trouble expressing themselves, making friends, low motivation, or struggle with worries.
CBT is an evidence-based treatment that identifies the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
In therapy, your child would learn healthy and effective coping tools to assist with emotion regulation, including managing and expressing their feelings.
By recognizing unhealthy thought patterns, we can increase positive self-talk, self-confidence and self-esteem.
